Should the phrase "and to the republic for which it stands" be dropped from the U.S. Pledge of Allegiance?
Most "Pledge of Allegiance" polls focus on whether or not the phrase "under God" should be retained. Almost completely overlooked is the question of whether or not the flag still stands for a constitutional republic. If our days as a republic are long gone, shouldn't we drop that phrase from the pledge?
Yes -- What we have now is better than what the Constitution intended.
Yes -- I'm not sure what we have now, but it certainly isn't a republic.
No -- Our current form of government can still be considered a constitutional republic.
No -- I'm not sure what we have now, but adhering to tradition is very important.
No -- Although we've drifted far from the ideal of a constitutional republic, we shouldn't give up our struggle to return to that ideal.
